Anläggningen omfattar en grynkvarn, träränna och turbinhus, ett vattendrivet sågverk och elgenerator samt en benstamp. Dessutom fanns det en smedja och ett brygghus. Det producerades havregryn, havrekli och havremjöl i Hillefors grynkvarn fram till 1988. Benmjöl tillverkades till mitten av 1930-talet då hemslakten förbjöds. Sågen togs ur bruk -65. Kvarnverksamheten har bedrivits sedan 1800-talets slut men de nuvarande byggnaderna stammar i huvudsak från 1913 då verksamheten återuppfördes efter en brand. 1923 rasade den gamla kvarndammen vid en stor översvämning. Den återuppbyggdes 1924-25 till sitt nuvarande skick med en fallhöjd på 2,65 meter. År 1947 togs den lilla elektriska kraftstationen på Säveåns södra strand i drift. Den ersatte en station från 1918. Själva kvarnbyggnaden är utformad i tegel medan ränna, såg och benstamp är byggda i trä. Hillefors grynkvarn är byggnadsminne sedan 1990. Kvarnen ägs av Lerums kommun och arrenderas av Hillefors grynkvarns Museiförening som arbetar med att återställa kvarnen i sådant skick att tillverkning av havregryn åter blir möjlig och att den skall bli mer intressant som besöksmål. I korthet går det till så att havren skalas, rensas och krossas till gryn. De första åren gjordes krossgryn men snart gick man över till ångpreparerade havregryn. 1905 och 1909 härjades grynkvarnen av bränder vilka troligen orsakades av gnistbildning från skalningen av havregryn som vi denna tid skedde med kvarnstenar. 1913 var kvarnen återuppbyggd, denna gång i tegel. Anläggningen har sedan utökats genom tillbyggnad av norra och södra flygeln, 1929 respektive 1940. 1923 rasade den gamla kvarndammen vid en stor översvämning. Den återuppbyggdes 1924-25 till sitt nuvarande skick med en fallhöjd på 2,65 meter. Under andra världskriget levererades havregrynen till staten och man arbetade i treskift i kvarnen. 1947 togs den lilla elektriska kraftstationen på Säveåns södra strand i drift. Den ersatte en liten station från 1918. 1987 Det är då kvarnverksamheten avvecklades och Lerums kommun köper den.
