Title A name given to the resource Gamla Lödöse Description An account of the resource I över hundra år har staden Gamla Lödöse undersökts av arkeologer. De har funnit runt en halv miljon fynd. Utgrävningsfynd som berättar för oss om vardag och drömmar i den medeltida staden Lödöse. Den första större undersökningen gjordes åren 1915-20, då Carl af Ugglas fick uppgiften att dokumentera Göteborgs äldsta föregångare inför stadens 300-års jubileum. Resultaten av hans arbete med både arkeologi och arkivforskning publicerades 1931 och har blivit en ’bibel’ för Lödöseforskaren. Namnet Lödöse betyder Ljudaåns mynningar. Det var på ön mellan dessa åarmar som de första husen byggdes. Man kan undra varför en stor handelsstad växte fram just här så tidigt på medeltiden. Flera omständigheter bidrog till att läget var bra. Göta Älv markerade gränsen mot Norge och inte förrän i mitten av 1200-talet fick Sverige en landremsa mot Västerhavet. Vattenvägarna var mycket viktiga och Göta Älv var segelbar upp till vattenfallen någon mil norr om staden. Just i Lödöse mynnade Ljudaån ut i älven, och via åns dalgång gick ridvägar in mot det bördiga Västergötland. Där fanns ett överskott av boskaps-produkter som fraktades till Lödöse för att säljas vidare ut i Europa. Lödöse blev det medeltida Sveriges enda hamn mot väster och därmed en betydande köpstad. Idag finns inga synliga lämningar kvar av den viktiga staden. Men i jorden finns spår efter de människor som levat här på medeltiden. Vid sekelskiftet 1900 var spinneriet Skandinaviens största. Det var för att underlätta driften i spinneriet som företagets driftingenjör, Sven Wingqvist, uppfann det så kallade sfäriska kullagret. Som en naturlig följd av detta bildades Svenska kullagerfabriken, SKF, år 1907. Gamlestadens Fabriker AB:s industriområde präglas idag av en blandning av byggnader från 17-, 18- och 1900-talen, som alla representerar olika arkitektoniska stilar och ideal. SKF upptar ett stort industrikvarter norr om Säveån i Gamlestaden, ett kvarter med välbevarad bebyggelse från 1910- till 1960-tal som vittnar om företagets utveckling och historia. Gasklockan (Gasbehållare 1) uppfördes 1932-1933 och ersatte då ett flertal uttjänta gasklockor på Gullbergsvass. Då den byggdes var den Göteborgs högsta byggnad. Gasbehållare 1 är idag en av endast fyra byggnader som återstår av Göteborgs viktigaste energiförsörjning från 1880-talet och fram till 1950-talet. Gasbehållaren har stått tom sedan 1993 då man gick över från användning av stadsgas av lättbensin till naturgas. Gasklockan är ett klassiskt landmärke i den göteborgska stadsbilden. På senare år har den bland annat omtalats för att den är bebodd av Göteborgs enda par av häckande pilgrimsfalk, en fågelart som är rödlistad. Rivningslov för gasklockan gavs 2014. Title A name given to the resource GASKLOCKAN Description An account of the resource GASKLOCKAN FD GASVERKET, GULLBERGSVASS, GÖTEBORG Gasklockan är en torrgasbehållare. Den består av en bottenvåning av betong, 3 meter invändig höjd, samt en cylinderformad överdel i 5 mm plåt. Gasklockan har formen av en regelbunden 20-hörning där stommen utgörs av vertikala ståndare och däremellan insatta plåtar. Inuti plåtcylindern rörde sig en skiva som vilade på gasen. Skivan är försedd med styranordningar. Högst upp vid takfoten sitter ett band av fönster. Gasklockan är cirka 80 meter hög och innehåller ett stort cylinderformat rum som får sitt dagsljus genom en rad fönster uppe vid taket. Gasklockan, Gasbehållare 1, uppfördes 1932-1933 och ersatte då ett flertal uttjänta gasklockor på Gullbergsvass. Den levererades av Maschinenfabrik Augsburg-Nurnberg, MAN, i Mainz med Götaverken som underleverantör. Då den byggdes var den Göteborgs högsta byggnad. Principen för denna typ av gasklockor utvecklades 1915 av MAN. På tomten stod fram till 1995 även en mindre gasklocka. Den var en våtgasklocka byggd 1918, 50 meter i diameter och ungefär hälften så hög som Gasbehållare 1. Gasklockan planeras att rivas under 2016.
