Kanalmuseet är av stor betydelse när det gäller att visa ett stycke kulturhistoria i denna del av Sverige. Kanalmuseet i Håverud berättar om barn, kvinnor och män och deras liv vid älvarna, sjöarna och Dalslands kanal från 1800-talets jordbruk till dagens pappersbruk. Alla har levt ett liv vid det vatten som sträcker sig från Vänern i söder till Stora Le i norr. De effektfulla och konstnärsdesignade miljöerna bidrar till att ett besök på museet blir en dramatisk resa med händelser vid vatten för hela familjen.</text>

Kulturmiljö&#13;
Platsen där Karlatornet planeras var landsbygd fram till 1940-talet när en stadsplan togs fram. I anslutning till hamn och varv växte industri- och verkstadsbebyggelse fram med koppling till hamnen och till bra transportvägar. Här har bland annat funnits säckväveri, gjuteri, kokslager och kontor. Kvarteret är idag brokigt med både småskalig och storskalig bebyggelse. I den postindustriella eran har nu andra verksamheter etablerats. Miljön har idag en karaktär av ”Brownfield”, övergivet industriområde där alternativa eller resurssvaga verksamheter kan etableras. Idag finns verksamheter med koppling till utbildning, kulturella och kreativa näringar som produktionsbolag, filmstudio, musikklubb vid sidan av bland annat ungkarlshotell och träningscenter.&#13;
Sociala och ekonomiska värden&#13;
Utifrån ett socialt och ekonomiskt perspektiv har flera viktiga värden som finns i området blivit tydliga. Det gäller den tillåtande och alternativa atmosfären, bebyggelsens praktiska funktioner, samarbeten och närverk, låga hyror och det geografiska läget som innebär goda kommunikationer och bra kundunderlag.&#13;
