Skansen, som också benämns som fort, ingick i ett försvarssystem som under andra världskriget byggdes upp i Dalsland. Parsetjärn skulle försvara landsvägen från Norge och består av två skansar, på norra respektive södra sidan av vägen. Däremellan finns ett treradigt pansarhinder av stenblock. Skansen norr om vägen är mest lättillgänglig och iordningställd för besök. Här finns bland annat 13 skyttevärn och en så kallad KG-hatt (ett fullsäkert värn för kulsprutegevär), stabsrum och skyddsrum. Vid väg 164 mellan Ed och Strömstad finns en rastplats vid vattnet, Parsetjärnet med informationsskyltar med mera. I Dalsland och Bohuslän, med landskapens närhet till det då av Tyskland ockuperade Norge, finns fortfarande många spår efter andra världskriget i form av försvarsanläggningar, stridsvagnshinder och liknande. I Dalsland finns tre skansar som är tillgängliga och öppna för allmänheten, förutom Parsetjärn som är den bäst bevarade är det Skans 453 norr om Håverud och Håmule skans i området mellan Färgelanda och Uddevalla.
